Volunteer
The sponsors of the TEN Campaign can connect you to meaningful volunteer opportunities in support of their mission to promote successful integration by building bridges through education, friendship and advocacy.
Education
Orientation presentations are delivered throughout the year on a monthly basis. Learn about how refugees arrive to Fort Wayne, what happens once they are here, how they begin their journey in establishing a new life in the United States, and the ways in which you can get involved as a volunteer.
Training and development opportunities are provided on a continuing basis, specific to a volunteer’s interest and engagement with the new International community they are interacting with. Gain a better understanding of cultural matters, issues related to poverty, and how to assist with empowering others toward their desired future.
English as a New Language (ESL/ENL) classes assist with the empowerment process. Train to teach as a volunteer, and experience the rewards of giving hope and skills to a newcomer.
Transportation can be a hurdle that is difficult to overcome in someone’s pursuit of independence and mobility, including availability for employment. Learn how to use the Citilink bus system in Fort Wayne, and then teach others how to utilize this system as well. You might also consider providing assistance to someone who is trying to obtain their driver’s license.
Friendship
Circle of Friends is one way many people have established relationships across cultures and communities. American volunteers who are interested in becoming a friend to newly arrived refugees provide support and encouragement through spending time with families who simply need someone to help them get their feet under them. The sharing and exchange of cultures is one way that the bridging of communities takes place. The understanding that develops as a result can mean the difference between isolation and integration, conflict and peace.
Advocacy
Movie Nights at the Rialto Gallery occur throughout the year. Films that highlight social and global issues related to refugees and their experiences are the focus of these nights. Come to learn more about these issues, wrestle with the implications, and then choose to act on new insights or convictions to work toward the development of others.
Financial Support for operations and programming of The Reclamation Project is always appreciated. Donations and fundraisers have a history of providing English classes, training of volunteers, sewing machines for job development, materials and supplies, and general operating costs of the organization... all of which impact the lives of refugees.
Job Development and Employment is key to a person’s ability to become self sufficient in our community. Networks of employers and small businesses committed to hiring refugees make a difference in the future of each family they touch. Individuals who provide leads and guidance through the hiring process, as well as follow-up and support beyond the initial hire, help ensure success for all involved. And small business owners who are willing to help mentor new entrepreneurs can open windows of opportunity for others.
Voices speaking up on matters related to the welfare of those who have been displaced as refugees can: teach others about issues and needs, speak into governmental decision-making, encourage support from the broader community, and help empower communities toward their own self governed future.
